Tottenham must revive Orkun Kokcu interest amid Arsenal reports

It was reported by the Daily Mail in December 2018 that Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal were amongst the clubs to send scouts to watch Feyenoord’s Orkun Kokcu.

Kokcu was making his senior debut on the day that Spurs and the Gunners were having a look at the teenager. He marked the occasion with a goal and assist.

Surprisingly perhaps, Kokcu went into this season still with the Eredivisie side. In total, he scored three goals and provided four assists in just 11 appearances during that first campaign.

He is now a key part of Feyenoord’s side, starting seven league games already. And it appears that a queue of clubs is once again forming.

The Daily Mail has reported this week that Arsenal have rejoined the race to sign the 18-year-old, who is available for just £20 million.

For that price, Tottenham cannot allow the Gunners to win the battle for his signature. Therefore, Spurs must also get back involved in the chase.

Mauricio Pochettino appears to now have little choice but to conduct an overhaul of his squad. Spurs have made a poor start to the campaign, and a number of their key men have struggled.

Could Kokcu step up?

One of those men is Christian Eriksen. The Dane has not been at his best, and it appears that he could soon be on the move, with the Daily Mirror reporting that his contract expires in the summer.

Replacing Eriksen is not going to be easy if he does leave. And it would be a gamble to place too much faith in Kokcu. But he is an incredibly creative player who can play in a variety of midfield roles.

In his final season with the under-19s, Kokcu scored 17 goals and provided 34 assists. If he can produce anything like that form at senior level, teams can surely forget about paying £20 million.

Tottenham fans may have their doubts about Kokcu. And they could certainly be forgiven for wanting to see more established players targeted. But it also cannot be overlooked that Eriksen made his name in exactly the same league before moving to White Hart Lane.

Spurs have had the Turkey under-21 international on their radar previously. And Arsenal returning to the race surely has to be all the motivation they could need to make sure that they have another look in the very near future.
