Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama saw a late-summer move collapse on deadline day. According to The London Evening Standard, Wanyama’s move to Club Brugge fell through just before the European window slammed shut.
Wanyama will now remain at Tottenham and will be available for selection. But Mauricio Pochettino should not let Wanyama staying get in the way of Oliver Skipp’s development – here’s why.
Wanyama injury problems
Wanyama’s time at Tottenham has been hampered by several injury problems. The Kenya midfielder has struggled to stay fit and gain a regular spot in the Spurs starting line-up.
Pochettino has not been able to trust Wanyama to be a part of his plans for the upcoming season. He should not drop Skipp out of his first-team plans to accommodate injury-prone midfielder Wanyama.
Skipp needs games to improve

Skipp is highly-rated at Tottenham but he is still far from the finished article. The best way for him to improve as a player is to learn his trade with first-team minutes at Tottenham.
The 18-year-old has already got some first-team minutes under his belt but he needs to keep performing at Premier League level. Wanyama playing instead of him would slow his development.
Skipp is the long-term project
Pochettino needs to look at how to nurture his squad for the long-term future. Skipp is the long-term project for the North London club while it is likely that Wanyama will leave in January or next summer.
Therefore, it makes sense to play Skipp ahead of Wanyama. While Skipp is not quite as good as Wanyama at the moment, he will be at Tottenham for the long-term future, unlike the ex-Southampton midfielder.
