Tottenham Hotspur are now highly likely to lose Christian Eriksen this summer.

After months of speculation, the player made comments on Wednesday that he wishes to experience a new challenge.

He said in an interview with Danish magazine Ekstra Bladet: “If I have to go, then hopefully it will be a step up.

“I hope there will be a clarification during the summer. That’s the plan. I feel that I am a place in my career where I might want to try something new.”

It is a huge blow for Spurs, with Eriksen having been their master creator for the past five years.

Signed from Ajax for a bargain £11.5 million (BBC Sport), Eriksen has blossomed into one of Europe’s finest playmakers.

If they have to lose the Dane, then the club simply must follow the example of their Champions League final opponents, Liverpool.

TBR’s view

In January 2018, the Reds sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for a staggering fee of £142 million (BBC Sport).

With that money, Jurgen Klopp was able to make a handful of signings that have helped totally transform the team.

In came Virgil van Dijk that same month, and last summer, goalkeeper Alisson followed.

The pair have been utterly sensational for the Reds, and have shored up the defence in a major way.

The Coutinho cash also arguably allowed the signings of Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri to happen, with all three playing big roles last term.

Tottenham will not receive as high a fee for Eriksen as Liverpool got for their Brazilian, but it will be vital for Spurs to spend any money from his sale wisely and in the right areas.
