In summer 2013, Tottenham Hotspur sold their standout performer Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
It was a reported world record transfer fee (at the time) of £86m but Spurs found it hard to replace Bale.
Despite having plenty of money to work with, Tottenham could not replicate Bale’s success and several of their signings were underwhelming.
However, one man stepped up and assumed Bale’s role as the main playmaker in the squad.
Christian Eriksen joined in 2013 along with all the other players bought with the Bale money.
But five-and-a-half years later, Real Madrid are once again plotting to prise Tottenham’s key man away.

The Spanish giants want to bring Eriksen to the Bernabeu, according to The Sun, in a £40m deal.
Considering today’s market and how talented Eriksen is, £40m is nowhere near his true value.
But given his contract situation – he has 18 months left but talks are at an impasse – the Denmark international could leave Spurs for a relatively cheap fee.
Tottenham cannot afford to once again lose their main midfield man like they did with Bale.
Eriksen’s presence in the team is irreplaceable; he carves out so many opportunities for Harry Kane and the other attacking midfielders, while weighing in with goals himself.
The 26-year-old is in the prime of his career and Spurs need to make his contract situation their priority.
