With the way things are going to Tottenham Hotspur at the moment, there is an argument to be made as to why the club didn’t make a move to sign Christian Eriksen.

Instead, the club sat back and watched as Brentford pulled off one of the biggest signings in their history. Eriksen, now declared fit after his nightmare heart scare in the Euros, is back in the Premier League and could play a key role in keeping the Bees up.

Tottenham, meanwhile, continues to struggle. They’ve lost three PL games on the spin now and things don’t get any easier with a trip to Manchester City this coming weekend.

As a club, it’s clear that Spurs still have an affinity with Eriksen. After all, this is a player who played 305 games for the club before leaving for Inter. That affinity has been shown once again today, with the official Tottenham Twitter account sending birthday wishes to Eriksen as he hits 30 today.

And while hindsight is a wonderful thing in football, you do have to question Tottenham’s logic of not signing Christian Eriksen in January, given he was available for nothing.

Tottenham Blunder With Eriksen

Some might say that Spurs have already seen the best of Eriksen. They had him for years and got some magical moments and performances from the Dane. In that sense, there’d be a case to say why bring him back and risk tarnishing his legacy.

But on the reverse of that, this Spurs team is lacking in quality. In attacking areas, if Son and Kane aren’t firing, then there seems a distinct lack of class in the final third. As we all know, Eriksen has the ability to contribute in that sense, given he scored 69 and assisted an other 90 in his time with Spurs.

Further, he also enjoyed success with Antonio Conte in Italy. The Dane played 60 times under the Italian coach and was a key player in the Nerazzurri winning the Scudetto. Given Tottenham only signed Dejan Kulusevskia and Rodrigo Bentancur in January, surely there was a case for taking another punt on Eriksen?

Of course, time will tell when it comes to Eriksen and Brentford. But as things stand, given his quality, and Spurs’ own form, you can’t help but think Fabio Paratici has missed a trick here.
