Tottenham miss out on Kobel as Borussia Dortmund announce £12.9m transfer

Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of young goalkeeper Gregor Kobel from Stuttgart for just €15m (£12.9m).

The 23-year-old has joined BVB on a five-year deal from the Bundesliga rival.

Kobel was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, who were said to be battling the North Rhine-Westphalia giants for the shot-stopper.

According to Kicker, Spurs were going head-to-head with the Black and Yellow. The publication reported that the outfit were possibly looking for a replacement for aged star Hugo Lloris.

Kobel has enjoyed a great season for the Red, finishing with a save percentage just short of 70%.

TBR View: Dortmund hands Tottenham bitter blow with Kobel transfer

Over the last few campaigns, Lloris’ quality in goal for the Lilywhites has dwindled.

His form has been sketchy with numerous errors for the north London giants. The loss away to Brighton and Hove Albion last season was an eye-opening experience with regards to his quality.

Lloris’ horrible error in the lead up to Neal Maupay’s opener was one of three he’s made over the last two years.

Kobel has built up a stunning reputation during his time with Stuttgart with former Arsenal chief scout, Sven Mislintat labelling the star as ‘quality‘.

With the north London outfit having been handed a blow in their chase of a replacement, you’d hope they have a replacement.

Failure to replace the veteran undermines a potential improvements in defence.
