Tottenham miss deadline to take up option in Lucas Moura contract
Tottenham Hotspur decided against triggering the option to extend the contract of Lucas Moura by a further year, with The Telegraph reporting that the Brazilian is likely to leave the club before the start of next season.
It has been a disappointing campaign for Lucas. He is yet to start a single game in the Premier League, coming off the bench eight times so far. He has also not featured at all since the resumption of the domestic season.
His current contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign. Tottenham however, did have an option to extend the 30-year-old’s deal by a further 12 months.
Tottenham unlikely to keep Lucas Moura
But there was a deadline. According to a report from The Telegraph, Spurs had until the end of December to trigger the option. And the report suggests that Tottenham did not make their move before that point.
Of course, Fabio Paratici could still look to hand Lucas a new contract. But The Telegraph reports that this is likely to be his last season with the club. He could even attract offers during this window.
It looks set to be a disappointing way for Lucas to bow out at Tottenham. He has been a brilliant servant. Jose Mourinho suggested that he was ‘amazing‘ during his tenure. And no Spurs fan will ever forget that semi-final performance against Ajax which got the club into the Champions League final.
However, he has fallen to the periphery of the squad in more recent times. The likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison have had bigger impacts on the side since their arrivals.
It seems to be right time to let Lucas move on. He will want to play regularly at this stage of his career. And that, unfortunately, is unlikely to happen again at Tottenham.
