Tottenham may have signed £20m winger if they didn’t get Timo Werner

Timo Werner has arrived at Tottenham as their new attacking signing this month.

Spurs were linked with a number of new attacking options heading into the winter window, but, in the end, they opted to bring Werner in from RB Leipzig.

Whether or not this proves to be a good deal or not remains to be seen, and if Werner doesn’t end up being a hit at Spurs, they may well live to regret this one.

Indeed, Spurs had other exciting options lined up, and speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas has been discussing Spurs’ alternative options, and he says that the north London club would seriously have looked at Jota from Al-Ittihad if Werner hadn’t come in.

Jota was Spurs’ Werner alternative

Thomas shared what he knows about the £20m attacker.

“They also had a few loan options and I’m aware that Jota was a loan option for them, and I think that if they hadn’t signed Timo Werner that’s one they would’ve looked at a bit more seriously,” Thomas said.

Werner the better option

Spurs may have made the right choice here in signing Werner ahead of Jota.

Yes, Jota was a fantastic player for Ange Postecoglou when he was at Celtic, but Werner is much more proven at the top level and he’s more versatile, able to play on the left or up front as well.

As much as we like Jota as a player, he’s never played at the very top level, while Werner has scored goals in the Bundesliga before, and he is a Champions League winner.

We’re not saying that Werner is going to be a home-run of a signing, but his CV is much more impressive than Jota’s at this moment in time, it has to be said.

Let’s hope that Werner can find a bit of form and become a star at Tottenham.
