Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is a summer transfer target for Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.
The 30-year-old is currently on loan at Serie A outfit Roma and is enjoying a successful season in the capital.
He has played 24 games in all competitions with Paulo Fonseca’s team currently fifth in the division.
The report suggests that the Italians want to keep him but doing do will be impossible if the club doesn’t qualify for the Champions League.
United want £16.5 million for the centre-back who is also interesting Everton ahead of the summer transfer window.
It isn’t beyond the realms of reality that Smalling could head back to Old Trafford and compete for a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.
The player who boasts 219 Premier League appearances to his name is paid £70,000-a-week at United. As a result, he should be affordable for both Everton and Tottenham.
Smalling was a regular in the United team during the first half of 2018/19 with Mourinho in charge at the club.
A central defender will almost certainly be high on Tottenham’s list of targets during the summer.
Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez will be in place next season but Jan Vertonghen is out of contract and could leave.
That will leave Mourinho needed at least one centre-back and Smalling’s experience could make him ideal.
TBR View – Smalling would surely jump at the chance to join Tottenham
Having headed to another country to revive his form, the England defender will surely relish another crack at the Premier League.
Smalling has worked with Mourinho before at United and it’ll be interesting to see whether he would fancy a reunion with the outspoken boss.
The defender has 323 appearances to his name at Old Trafford and that level of experience isn’t to be sniffed at.
Tottenham are regulars in the Champions League and although they face a fight to return to the competition next season, a move to the club should still prove attractive.
