Tottenham loanee Tanguy Ndombele rated as Napoli’s ‘worst’ player on Sunday

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Tanguy Ndombele has been labelled as ‘the worst’ Napoli player in their win over AS Roma on Sunday.

Spurs paid a club-record £53.8 million (BBC) to sign the Frenchman back in 2019. He was one of the most exciting young players in Europe at the time, but sadly for him, things did not work out in North London.

Ndombele was sent out to Napoli at the start of this season, and his performances have been a mixed bag. His latest display, however, is one he’ll want to forget very fast.

Napoli have been unbelievable since the start of the season. The Partenopei are three points clear at the top of both, the Serie A table and their Champions League group, at the moment, and Luciano Spalletti deserves immense praise for that.

The Napoli boss also deserves a lot of credit for bringing out Ndombele’s talents. The Frenchman, after a difficult start, began to show his quality in Italy, and there have been signs that he could fulfil the potential that he showed when he was at Lyon before joining Spurs.

However, inconsistency remains his biggest issue, and the game on Sunday against his old boss Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma highlighted that once again.

Ndombele started in central midfield and had 42 touches of the ball. However, he gave away the ball on nine different occasions, one of which led to a shot, which could easily have been a goal (Sofascore). He picked up a yellow card just two minutes into the second half, and Spalletti decided he had seen enough 10 minutes later.

Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Sportwitness, reviewed Sunday’s big name. Ndombele was given a 5.5/10 rating and was branded as ‘the worst’ of all players in Napoli’s team.

He was criticised for losing the ball to Mady Camara at the start and for coming second-best almost every time he came up against the Guinean during his 57 minutes on the pitch.

You never really know what you’ll get with Ndombele, do you?

On some days, the Frenchman is unplayable and is the best player on the pitch by a mile. On others, he just feels like a passenger in the middle of the park who offers very little in attack and in defence.

That inconsistency is one of the biggest reasons why none of the managers he worked under at Tottenham really fancied him. It’s looking more and more likely that he has no future there, but Napoli could well think otherwise.

Despite his disappointing display on Sunday, Ndombele has caught many people’s eye in Naples. If he can just have a strong campaign from now until the end of the season, Aurelio De Laurentiis could well splash the cash to sign him on a permanent deal.
