Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks praises ‘perseverance’ of goal-shy Fernando Llorente

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has been praising striker Fernando Llorente, in an interview with the club’s official website.

The 33-year-old has come in for some criticism from some sections of the Spurs faithful after some less than convincing displays during Harry Kane’s absence.

The comments from Winks seem to suggest, however, that Llorente has the backing of his team-mates.

Winks told the official website: “He’s someone who is fantastic at persevering.

“He’s perhaps had some difficult times here and there, but it just shows how far he’s come, how mentally strong he is because he’s been fantastic for us.

“He offers more than goals – he holds the ball up and he’s a big focal point for us. He offers a different dimension going forward and on Saturday when he came on, he was key in holding the ball up and getting the assist.”

Spurs have needed someone to step up and take on the mantle of scoring goals from Kane as he nurses ankle ligament damage.

The ex-Juventus man has netted just once in the Premier League this season and has struggled of late.

Spurs remain just five points from the summit of the top flight but it was hoped that Llorente would have a bigger impact in Kane’s absence.

Winks’ quotes, however, do show that perhaps some of the criticism from Spurs supporters is unjust.

Pochettino has clearly placed his trust in the ability he possesses and his team-mates clearly value his contribution to the team.

With Kane still a few weeks shy of full fitness, Llorente is likely to be called upon again and a couple of goals would do his confidence the world of good.
