Tottenham linked with 28-year-old that Hugo Lloris called ‘calm, concentrated and determined’ last year
Tottenham are being linked with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, who previously earned big praise from Spurs captain Hugo Lloris.
Duncan Castles, speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast, reports that Spurs are interested in signing the 28-year-old. In addition, the player wants to leave the Santiago Bernabeu and could be sold for around €50million (£43million).
However, The Sun claims Manchester United could be close to securing a deal for the La Liga star.
Varane, who earns £197,000-a-week, could end up playing in the Premier League for the first time in his career.
The centre-back has remarkably won 18 trophies as a Madrid player. Also, he won the World Cup with France back in 2018.
France teammate Lloris, who lifted that World Cup trophy, praised Varane back in 2020 as “calm, concentrated and determined”:
“He is a great champion above all else. He has great experience. The fact that he has played for Real Madrid for 9 years, gives him a certain experience, legitimacy in his position. He is a leader in our team. When there are matches on the line, he is capable of elevating his level. In a career, there are always less good matches. But I find him calm, concentrated and determined to help the team,” Lloris said.
Raphael Varane would be mega Tottenham signing
Reports seem to suggest Varane is heading to Old Trafford, but he’d be a colossal addition for Spurs if they managed to swoop in.
He’s an ever-present in the France XI, as well as vital for Spanish giants Madrid.
However, his form has been a little inconsistent over the year.
Overall, Varane is still a top-class defender at a perfect age, so is exactly the kind of transfer target that would help Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
