Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou ahead of the January window – but the player has been linked with Arsenal recently, so which team needs the French star more?
Zagadou, 21, is still recovering from a knee injury which he picked up in September while on international duty with France’s Under-21 side. He is yet to play in any of Dortmund’s fixtures this season, due to that injury.
Despite that, 90Min claim Tottenham have added Zagadou to a three-man shortlist as they eye a defender in January – along with South Korean giant Kim Min-jae and Sassuolo stopper Gian Marco Ferrari. But could they find competition for Zagadou?
Very recently, in the summer of 2019, Arsenal were being linked with Zagadou. Reports claimed that Zagadou was all for a move from Arsenal to Borussia Dortmund, as per The Sun, as he wanted a reunion with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
So, which north London club could do with Zagadou more? Tottenham lost Jan Vertonghen in the summer – a left-footed centre-back and Zagadou fits that profile. Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier are first choice, but lack pace and Zagadou has that.
Davinson Sanchez is error prone, something which clearly is not appreciated by Jose Mourinho – who decided to hand Joe Rodon his Premier League debut over Sanchez against Chelsea on Sunday. Japhet Tanganga is still learning his trade.
At Arsenal, Mikel Arteta has plugged the gap at the back. New signing Gabriel is a good addition, while Pablo Mari is coming back into the team after an injury. But Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and David Luiz all see their deals expire in the summer.
In terms of numbers, Arsenal need a centre-back but when it comes to actual specific types of centre-back – Zagadou has all the traits that Tottenham want when it comes to landing a central defender. For both sides, he would be a good addition.
