Despite Tottenham enjoying a fine summer of transfer dealings in the main, there were a number of linked players who never quite progressed past the rumour stage.

Of course, Spurs fans can be delighted with their summer business. Reguilon, Bale, Doherty, Hojbjerg, all fine signings who are having a big impact at the club already.

But with the transfer period finishing later this year, the January window is now just around the corner and opens in just over 8 weeks’ time.

And depending on how Tottenham are getting on, we could see Daniel Levy once again back Mourinho to try and get that first Premier League trophy in through the door.

One name who was linked in the summer was Italian Federico Bernardeschi. Calciomercato claimed back in the summer that Juventus were seriously considering selling the Italian midfielder, with Spurs among the clubs interested.

The 26-year-old has yet to complete 90 minutes this season being on the fringes of the Juventus squad. But he showed last night with a goal for Italy that this is a player who is capable at the highest level.

Another option

Tottenham have an abundance of options in midfield and attack but it is a long season. Most teams who are doing well try to capitalise on their good form, so we shouldn’t rule Spurs out of making moves in January.

And with Dele Alli still facing an uncertain future and Erik Lamela once again injured, there may well be a place for Bernardeschi at Spurs.

Obviously, it would take some negotiation on the part of both clubs. Juve were thought to be keen on swapping the Italian for Tanguy Ndombele, something that’s simply not going to happen now.

But with a stellar showing last night and fresh legs from the lack of Serie A minutes, Federico Bernardeschi might prove a shrewd signing for Tottenham come the winter window.
