‘Sloppy’: £30m player Spurs have reportedly moved to sign struggling at World Cup, national media aren’t happy

Tottenham have been linked with a £30 million move to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan (The Express). Last night, he was in World Cup action and the national media in Holland weren’t overly enamoured by his performance levels.

Dumfries was named in the starting line-up for Holland’s final group game. Louis van Gaal’s men eased into the last 16 with a comfortable 2-0 win over the host nation, on a night when they might have scored more.

For the Inter man, this World Cup has seen him become a regular in Van Gaal’s team. But, it seems that he might have to start doing more with this opportunity that he’s been given.

Football Oranje weren’t particularly impressed with his showing last night. He was given a 5/10 rating and slammed for being somewhat wasteful when he managed to get in possession of the ball.

The publication claimed: “Once again Dumfries did not reach the level we expect from him in a Netherlands shirt. Sloppy in possession and not able to create anything despite getting into some decent positions.”

Dumfries has been given the nod in the Holland team for this World Cup. He is starting ahead of ex-Celtic star Jeremie Frimpong and he won’t be taking his place for granted.

Given the unusual nature of a winter World Cup, the transfer window will open just weeks after the tournament. As a result, Spurs will be keeping a close eye on some players ahead of the winter window.

Tottenham linked with Dumfries and problem emerges

Maybe last night was a case of the job being already completed. Dumfries wasn’t the only player who laboured against the hapless host nation during a Group A dead rubber.

But, Antonio Conte is a taskmaster. He expects exceptionally high standards from his players regardless of the situation and with the Italian, second-best isn’t an option.

If Dumfries is serious about moving to Tottenham, he needs to do better. The 26-year-old needs to make sure he’s at it every single time he’s called upon and he will hope to improve against the USA in the last 16 of the competition.
