Premier League club Southampton have reportedly started contract talks with their defender Jannik Vestergaard, who has been linked with Tottenham recently.

Vestergaard, who is an £18million (Sky Sports) centre-back, has been at St Mary’s since 2018.

With his Southampton deal due to expire at the end of next season, Hampshire Live reports that they have entered negotiations with the 28-year-old about a possible new contract.

Vestergaard is someone that has reportedly been on the radar of Spurs.

According to the Mirror back in March, Spurs are considering a potential move to try sign the Denmark international in the summer.

Report suggest that Southampton have moved to try keep hold of their 6ft 6in colossus defender Vestergaard, which is no surprise given how important he is to them.

The ball-playing centre-half can play out from the back for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, and is a threat in the air in both boxes.

If he ended up at Spurs, it’s easy to picture him having a fairly decent impact given he’s experienced and now proven in the Premier League.

But if Jose Mourinho’s side really want to compete with the division’s elite teams then perhaps they need to be shopping in the top market for centre-backs to improve their backline.
