Tottenham could be about to appoint Daniel Fonseca as their manager and it could open the door for them to revisit their interest in Nicolo Zaniolo.

Zaniolo has been on the radar for Spurs for some time now. Back in the summer of 2020, Jose Mourinho was said to have targeted the Italian.

Indeed, as reported on TBR at the time, Tottenham offered around £44.6m for Zaniolo, with a five-year deal on the table. But, since then, Mourinho has left and the Roma midfielder has remained in Serie A.

Further, Zaniolo also suffered a heartbreaking and devastating cruciate ligament injury in the September of 2020. That kept him out all season for Roma, with no minutes registered.

But while Zaniolo is working his way back to fitness and looking forward to working under Jose Mourinho, could Spurs and Fonseca actually revisit past interest? It’s certainly one to consider for the club.

Tottenham need quality and a fully-fit Zaniolo brings that

When you talk about young midfield players who have a bit of everything, then you’re talking about the likes of Zaniolo.

He’s so versatile, for one. The 21-year-old can play in the middle, on both flanks, or even as a striker or false nine if needed. That sort of quality can be hard to come by.

Zaniolo has already got seven caps for Italy, too. Indeed, he’d have been a certainty for the squad this summer had it not been for injury.

Naturally, Spurs will want to know he is back fit before they even consider any sort of new bid. But with Fabio Paratici due to arrive in North London, he’ll want to make a big signing to show he means business.

Zaniolo could be that signing. Quality in abundance, young, and with plenty more to give, he’d be perfect for Spurs.

In fact, former Tottenham hero Luka Modric labelled the Italian as a ‘pure talent’ previously. High praise indeed from a quality operator who knows a thing or two about midfield players.
