Report: Tottenham now want another South American to partner Romero but player could choose Everton instead

Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to press on in their search for a new defender and their search has now led them to Rodrigo Becao of Udinese.

That’s according to reports from Italy anyway, where TuttoUdinese claims that Becao is being monitored by both Tottenham and Everton ahead of what would be a £17m move to the Premier League.

Becao, 26, has been a regular fixture in the Udinese side and played 35 games last season. That impressive tally took his overall games played with Udinese to over 100 since making the move from CSKA Moscow.

7 Footballers Who Were GENUINELY Irreplaceable

Spurs are desperate to bring in a new defender to partner Eric Dier and Cristian Romero at the heart of their defence. As is well known, Antonio Conte sees Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni as his ideal signing, while another South American, Gleison Bremer, has also been mentioned.

But the name of Becao is a new one. The Brazilian would be considerably cheaper than Bastoni, of course, but whether he brings the same quality is in question. However, at 26, the defender does have his prime years ahead of him and Conte might be confident of extracting even more from him in the coming seasons.

TBR’s View: Rodrigo Becao Surely Just A Back Up Option For Tottenham

Tottenham need a defender but their fans would surely be disappointed if it was Becao and not a Bastoni or Bremer at this stage.

They’ve been built up to almost expect a top, top signing to come in this summer. And that’s not to say Becao couldn’t be a top signing, but he’s not in the same league as Bastoni.

Should Tottenham move for Becao, it might suggest they’ve lost out on some of their main targets. In reality, this is probably just the name of one of many players the club are watching.
