A report from Foot Mercato has suggested that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho told Serge Aurier that he can be one of the best right-backs in the world.

The Ivorian defender has struggled for form at Spurs, although he has looked a little bit better under the stewardship of Mourinho.

Aurier signed for Tottenham in 2017. He cost the club £23 million from French giants PSG, signing a five-year deal (Sky Sports).

The latest report from Foot Mercato claims that Mourinho told the player he could be among the best right-backs in the world during a 10-minute conversation in French.

Aurier has played in every game under Mourinho. His clumsy challenge to give a penalty away against Manchester United cost Tottenham, otherwise, he has looked solid under the new boss.

In a couple of seasons at the club, he has made 55 appearances, scoring five goals and registering 10 assists.

Putting Aurier in any bracket for best in the world would have seemed hilarious at the start of the current campaign. Under Mourinho, however, there is hope that the 60-cap player can discover the form that saw Spurs sign him.

With right-back options pretty limited at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Aurier will get plenty of game time.

The message given to Aurier epitomises Mourinho’s style of management. Some players badly lost their way under Mauricio Pochettino but the new boss already looks to be instilling confidence in his squad.

Aurier’s Spurs career hasn’t been the best so far but he will view Mourinho’s tenure as a chance to wipe the slate clean.

At 26 he might improve a little bit and it will be interesting to see exactly what improvements Mourinho can make to Aurier’s game.
