Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has emerged as a shock transfer target for Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, according to German publication Kicker.
The 32-year-old has been left out of the squad for Tottenham’s first three Premier League fixtures and could move before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Any departure for Vertonghen would end a seven-year association with the club which has seen him make 285 appearances for the club.
The man with 114 caps for Belgium was part of Tottenham’s sensational run to the Champions League final last season.

Leverkusen will take part in the Champions League this season and the left-footer would add some crucial experience to their back four.
The German club has won their opening two Bundesliga fixtures during 2019/20 and Vertonghen’s arrival would enhance their chances of another good season.
TBR Verdict – Tottenham should be wary about letting defender leave
Although Vertonghen only has a single year left on his contract, Tottenham should think very carefully before allowing him to leave.
The Belgian is an experienced player who could undoubtedly still do a job in Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

With the window shut for English clubs no replacement would be sought until January at the earliest and an injury to Toby Alderweireld or Davinson Sanchez could leave Tottenham short.
Given Vertonghen’s age, it seems unlikely that Spurs will recoup too much for the £100,000-a-week (Spotrac) player and it could be a better bet to keep him around the club instead.
