Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho may choose to dip his toe into the transfer market during the January transfer window.

The new boss will hope to put his own stamp on his squad of players, with defensive reinforcements likely to be the priority.

Spurs were beaten 1-0 by Southampton yesterday and are six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League.

Toby Alderweireld has recently penned a new deal but Jan Vertonghen is out of contract in the summer and that could be a concern.

Napoli and Ajax have declared an interest in the 32-year-old (Telegraph) and a departure could take place.

Both clubs can discuss a pre-contract deal with the centre-back and his future looks unclear.

If he does leave it will surely see Mourinho enter the transfer market. Leeds central defender Ben White has been interesting Spurs, according to the Daily Mail.

The young defender is currently on loan at Elland Road from Brighton and has caught the eye during his temporary stint.

At 22, White is regarded as a player who could go onto great things and he has helped Leeds to top of the Championship this season.

Signing the youngster to replace Vertonghen could prove masterful if Mourinho can pull off the deal.

White is likely to spend the season on loan at Elland Road but a summer switch to Tottenham could prove fruitful.

Quality

White is a defender with an old head on young shoulders.

He has shown maturity way beyond his years this season, boasting tremendous ball-playing qualities.

According to Who Scored, White has a pass success ratio of 84.8% and wins over three aerial duels every game.

He is an uncompromising defender and his passion could make him a favourite among the club’s supporters.

Boosting the club’s homegrown quota would be ideal and he would complement the likes of Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Harry Kane impeccably well.

White is thought to have a valuation of £20 million, according to The Argus, and that is well within Tottenham’s means.

Mourinho could pull off a superb signing if he lands White and he could be a quality long-term replacement for Vertonghen.
