Tottenham Hotspur are the latest club to reportedly express an interest in Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden, according to Chronicle Live.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will be keen to strengthen his squad in the summer having not signed a player since January 2018. Several players will probably also depart the club.
The interest in Hayden isn’t thought to be firm just yet, although it would appear they have entered the race alongside Crystal Palace and West Ham.
The 24-year-old wasn’t in Rafa Benitez’s plans at the start of the season but has proved a mainstay in the side for the second half of the campaign.
His 25 Premier League appearances helped the Magpies to a 13th-place finish. The ex-Arsenal man has a desire to move to a club further south to be closer to his young family.
The Chronicle Live reports that £20 million is likely to be the valuation of Hayden and that doesn’t look like bad business. Spurs could do with some midfield reinforcements and the Newcastle man would bolster that area.
Whether Hayden has the required quality to improve Spurs remains to be seen. The 24-year-old has never played in the Champions League and he would have to prove himself in that sense.
There is also a feeling that Hayden might not be a big enough name to appease the demanding Spurs supporters. Having reached the Champions League final this season, the fans will demand to be competing closer to the top of the Premier League during 2019/20.
If Pochettino is to get his team closer to a title challenge better players will be needed. Some people might question whether Hayden is actually an upgrade on the current crop or not.
