Tottenham in ‘front row’ for ‘extraordinary’ midfielder likened to Toni Kroos

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners in recent weeks.

For instance, Tuttosport reported earlier in February that Spurs have ‘knocked on the door’ of the Italian club about the Netherlands midfielder.

Now, Calciomercato has provided an update with regards to Tottenham’s interest in Koopmeiners, which also involves Liverpool.

The Italian outlet claims that Spurs and the Reds are currently in the ‘front row’ to potentially sign the 25-year-old.

However, Tottenham and Liverpool won’t be able to sign Koopmeiners for cheap, as Atalanta apparently want a huge fee for his signature.

The report adds that the Serie A side is after a similar fee to the one Manchester United paid for Rasmus Hojlund last summer, around £73million.

Tottenham could do with bolstering their midfield ranks in the summer, particularly considering Giovani Lo Celso’s future remains uncertain.

Considering Spurs have struck gold in the Italian market a fair few times in recent years, Koopmeiners certainly looks like a good option.

Tottenham target Teun Koopmeiners is a ‘Toni Kroos’ type player

Koopmeiners has been shining for Atalanta, registering 106 appearances, 23 goals and 12 assists for the Bergamo club. He also has 20 Netherlands caps to his name.

Atalanta hero Domenico Progna previously described the reported Tottenham target as “extraordinary“, while Koopmeiners’ agent Bert Baving has likened him to Toni Kroos.

He told FC Inter News: “It’s always difficult to make comparisons but he’s a Toni Kroos, Jorginho, (Nemanja) Matic or (Manuel) Locatelli type, only that Teun will score more goals than any of these players.”

Admittedly, it’s a steep fee, so Spurs will likely look to negotiate it down, but he certainly seems like a player who could do a job at N17.
