Tottenham Hotspur should scrap Morgan Sanson plan and swoop for Duje Caleta-Car instead – TBR View

Tottenham Hotspur have frequently been linked with a swoop on former manager Andre Villas-Boas’ new club Marseille to sign French midfielder Morgan Sanson.

It comes amid a desire from the French side to sell some of their best assets to English clubs to balance the books, with ex-West Ham chief executive Paul Aldridge brought in to do the job.

But with Tottenham chasing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Sanson seems an unlikely acquisition.

That does not mean Tottenham should not raid AVB, but they are just targeting the wrong man.

Instead, they should be looking at Croatian defender Duje Caleta-Car.

As reported by Foot Mercato this week, Marseille are expecting Caleta-Car to leave this summer with England his preferred destination.

Tottenham are certainly in need of a new centre-back and Caleta-Car could be the perfect recruit.

After struggling at the start of the season the 23-year-old Croatian became a key player for AVB, helping Marseille in their impressive Ligue 1 campaign.

With Jan Vertonghen leaving, Tottenham need another centre-back recruit and Caleta-Car’s no-nonsense style, blended with a degree of technical ability, make him a perfect Mourinho option.

Back in March, Le10 Sport reported interest in the player from the likes of Manchester United and Napoli. The asking price mentioned was around €30 million (£27m), a very enticing fee amid the current global financial crisis for a player of Caleta-Car’s quality and age.

If Tottenham are going to raid AVB for any of his star players this summer, it should be this one.
