A year ago today reports began emerging about Tottenham Hotspur’s apparent interest in the signature of Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico.
The Sun suggested that Tottenham were ready to make a £15 million move for the defender, who had just two years remaining on his contract with the Dutch giants.
No deal ever happened. Ajax lost key players Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong over the summer and were not prepared to lose any others. Tagliafico ended up signing a contract extension until 2022.

However, upon signing the deal, Tagliafico told the Ajax Twitter account, as reported by Goal, that he would stay at Ajax ‘for one more season’.
“I want to tell you that I will stay for one more season.
“Hopefully it will be a great year. Like it is this year.”
That report from Goal suggested that Arsenal and Atletico Madrid were leading the race for the defender. Since then Arsenal have emerged Bukayo Saka and signed Kieran Tierney. Atleti are blooding Brazilian talent, Renan Lodi. Tottenham, therefore, must move themselves into pole position.
Spurs are desperate for a new left-back, with Danny Rose set for a permanent exit and Ben Davies, Jan Vertonghen and Ryan Sessegnon all struggling to impress this campaign.
Tagliafico is also the perfect Mourinho defender. He has his attacking qualities but the Argentine is also a magnificent defender which the Portuguese would undoubtedly appreciate.
This summer, Tagliafico will hopefully be one of the first names on Tottenham’s transfer shortlist.
