Tottenham Hotspur fans have undoubtedly been left very impressed with the performances of Sergio Reguillon since he arrived at the club.
The Spaniard has been integral to an exciting start to the club’s season but this week reports were already emerging that the new recruit could be on his way out of the club.
That was down to a growing concern with Marcelo’s form as he moves into his mid-30s. Whilst Zinedine Zidane decided in the summer that there was no place in his team for Reguillon, the club’s hierarchy included a buy-back clause in the Tottenham transfer which would allow them to bring Reguillon back to the club for just €40 million (£36m) in 2021 or 2022.
But here is why Tottenham fans need not worry about the reports.
There is no doubt that Tottenham would be obliged to accept any offer for Reguillon from his former club, but he is not obligated to accept the return.
Whilst rejecting Real Madrid would be tough for any player, Reguilon would be foolish to head back after just one season at Tottenham.
It looks like he is relishing his involvement in the first-team and could have the left-back position locked down for years to come if he sticks around.
So yes, Real Madrid do hang over Tottenham in a damoclean manner when it comes to Reguillon’s future. However, considering the start to life he has clearly enjoyed in North London, it should not be something Tottenham need to worry about any time soon.
