Tottenham Hotspur should also rekindle Riqui Puig interest amid Carles Alena reports

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in the signature of Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena.

Mundo Deportivo reported yesterday that Mauricio Pochettino is intending on making a move for the player in January as a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen.

Tottenham were reportedly keen on the player in the summer and Alena has since struggled to make it into the first-team at Barcelona. So a January deal looks to be a potential option.

However, should Tottenham also be keeping tabs on another long-term target who is struggling to make his mark at Barcelona?

The player in question is Riqui Puig. The young midfielder, according to SPORT, was ‘very close’ to joining Tottenham last May. That came amid a new contract offer at Barcelona which he did not take up.

Puig, eventually, did sign a new deal running until 202i. That deal also includes a massive €100 million (£86.5 million) release clause, according to MARCA.

Last November, during the international break, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was spotted watching the Barcelona B side in action. This fuelled speculation that he was still keen on signing the talented midfielder, as reported by Sky Sports.

Since then, Puig would have surely hoped to have made more of an impact at Barcelona.

However, he remains in the Barcelona B team playing in Spain’s third-tier despite making two La Liga appearances toward the end of last season.

Tottenham would undoubtedly be able to offer him more regular first-team football and clearly, he is a player Pochettino is fond of.

If they are going to ask the question over Alena in January, then they should also be asking about Puig.
