It is being reported this week that Tottenham Hotspur could decide to sell a Belgian star as his contract at the club winds down. The player in question, on this occasion, is not Toby Alderweireld. Instead, it is being reported by The Mirror that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is prepared to let Mousa Dembele go should the right offer come in for the central midfielder.
The 30-year-old has been a star in the Tottenham midfield this season but he is reportedly not prepared to discuss a contract extension until after the World Cup. With that in mind, Tottenham are prepared to cash in on a player whose current deal expires in 2019.
For most Tottenham fans, this would be a huge mistake. Dembele was the star of Tottenham’s Champions League campaign this season. He has consistently made other central midfielders look average this campaign – including the likes of Nemanja Matic, Miralem Pjanic and Toni Kroos.
With rumblings of interest from Juventus and China, Dembele would not be short of offers in the summer.
But selling him would be a massive mistake from Tottenham and would surely cause some unrest in the dressing room at Hotspur Way.
Ask nearly any member of the Tottenham squad today who the best player at the club is and it will be a long time before you find someone who doesn’t say ‘Mousa Dembele’.
The Belgian is the inspiration for so many of the Tottenham players. A recent video from Sky Sports’ Soccer AM highlighted interviews with Tottenham players. The likes of Dele Alli, Victor Wanyama, Danny Rose and Harry Winks were all asked who the best player at Spurs was and Dembele was the answer. Eric Dier said the same, calling him ‘a freak of nature’ with ‘ballerina feet’.
Pochettino is also known to be a massive fan of the player and whilst Spurs should look for another central midfielder, it should be to play alongside the Belgian maestro.
Selling Dembele, the pendulum that makes the Tottenham team tick would make little sense and would certainly not go down well in the locker room.
Selling Dembele should not be an option for Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
