This summer it appears that Tottenham Hotspur may lose one of their more talented youngsters, with Marcus Edwards apparently looking for an exit from the club. The rumoured move has already seen comparisons launched by fans at the departure of another talented left-footed winger back in 2015. Spurs fans were left distraught when Ismail Azzaoui surprisingly departed in the summer of 2015.
The young Belgian had been in fine form for the Spurs youth team and the Belgian under-17s so Tottenham fans were bemused to see him leave for VfL Wolfsburg.
It seemed that the 2018-19 season was going to be the one where he finally had a breakthrough in Germany.
After an excellent loan spell with Willem II in the Netherlands, it seemed his career was now on the up.
But Azzaoui will now be set for a period of time on the sidelines once again. He shared on his Instagram this week that he had suffered another knee injury and had undergone surgery.
It is not the first time the former Tottenham starlet has suffered with a knee problem. He missed a year of football after an ACL tear in September 2016 and his progress has been severely halted as a consequence.
Tottenham fans will not wish their former talent ill and no doubt want him to have the best career he can. But it does seem his career has been in something of a nosedive since leaving Spurs.
Who knows if his luck would have been any better in London. But Tottenham are certainly not missing him as much as they might have if he hadn’t have suffered his recent injury woes.
