Tottenham Hotspur look like being busy during the January transfer window. Jose Mourinho has already added Gedson Fernandes to his ranks and more are set to follow.
A striker is wanted by Spurs who are without Harry Kane for a considerable amount of time, whilst a couple of full-backs would be most welcomed.
One man who could be fancied by Tottenham is Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo. According to El Desmarque, he is on Mourinho’s list of targets for this month.
The Portugal international only arrived at the Etihad during the summer. He cost £27.5 million from Juventus in a deal that saw Danilo go in the opposite direction (The Guardian).
Cancelo’s first season in the Premier League hasn’t gone according to plan. He has made 18 appearances for the Citizens but has started just six games in the top-flight.
That could see him seek out regular first-team football and that would be music to Mourinho’s ears.
Cancelo would certainly improve Tottenham. He is arguably better than Serge Aurier and he can also play at left-back.
The aspect that he can play in both full-back positions is perhaps most intriguing.
Danny Rose and Ben Davies are both suspect and Cancelo could find himself featuring there more often than not.
Aurier is seemingly fancied by Mourinho and it could be on the left where he would see a future for the man with 16 international caps.
Cancelo has played for Juventus, Inter Milan, Valencia and Benfica during his career and the chance to sign a player with such a CV doesn’t come around too often.
Tottenham are lacking some real quality in some key areas and it has hurt them this season.
if Mourinho is serious about getting his team challenging for, and winning, trophies he must add a stellar signing or two to his ranks.
Cancelo would represent a clever signing for the Portuguese boss and if City don’t want him, they should pounce.
