Tottenham Hotspur are set to keep tabs on Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong this season. The Express reports that Tottenham will be scouting the player throughout the season. The report suggests that Ajax value the player in the £40 million region after some excellent form in Amsterdam.
De Jong was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer. However, he ended up staying at Ajax after they booked a place in the main draw of the Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur are certainly targeting the right player. De Jong is an excellent box-to-box midfielder. Strong and dynamic with an excellent eye for a pass, he would be the perfect eventual replacement for Mousa Dembele in the heart of Tottenham’s midfield.
The Belgian is coming to the end of his time in North London. The greatly respected and appreciated fan favourite is in a contract stand-off with Tottenham and it was expected he would be sold this summer. He could even still leave. Reports this weekend have suggested that Beijing Guoan could make a move for him this month, with the Chinese transfer window still open.
Tottenham have young talent coming through like Harry Winks and Josh Onomah, but the Dutchman fits the profile perfectly to replace the 31-year-old.
Tottenham are right to keep tabs on the player. If they like what they see, which seems likely, a move next summer makes perfect sense.
