Tottenham Hotspur suffered defeat in the Premier League yesterday, as they were comfortably overturned by Premier League Champions elect Manchester City. City won 3-1 at Wembley, with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling doing the damage.
One player who particularly struggled for Spurs was Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez.
Just like in the Champions League exit against Juventus the Colombia youngster seemed to forget how to play the offside trap. Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling had a field day and his inexperience once again told against better opposition.
It again fuelled debate over the future of Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian defender is locked in a contract bind with the North London club. Daniel Levy will not sanction his wage demands, reported by the Daily Mail to be near the £200,000-a-week figure. The 29-year-old, who has also had a torrid season with injuries, is said to also want a five-year deal. Spurs will not sanction such a deal for a player of his age.
Fans, however, are wondering why he is not being played. Mauricio Pochettino continues to leave him out of the first-team squad, relying on the presence of Eric Dier and Ben Davies to cover central defence.
But Spurs fans know just how good a fully fit Alderweireld can be. Last season, most Premier League fans would argue he was the best in the division. So leaving him out of the squad just seems like cutting off the nose to spite the face.
Fans cannot understand why, whilst Alderweireld is still at Tottenham, the club is not using him regularly.
On Twitter, his continued absence was the hot topic among many Spurs fans. Some just want to see him play for Spurs again, others believe Tottenham must do whatever they can to convince him to remain with the club.
Here is some of the best reaction from Twitter to Alderweireld’s continued absence…

Luckily for Spurs Alderweireld’s price goes up after every performance like this. #THFC

#THFC I guess this puts a value on Alderweireld.

For anyone that says we’re fine without alderweireld, please shake your heads. #THFC

Is there a top 4 club in world football who wouldn’t want Toby Alderweireld?
That’s why we should pay him the money.

FT: Tottenham 1-3 Man City – The Citizens do the double on Spurs & deservedly so. The 1st 20 min a deja vu of the game at Etihad & that’s where we lost this tie. Also, another glaring reminder that Alderweireld is needed in these games. As for Lloris, he’s done. #THFC #COYS

Poch is responsible for the defeat. His stubbornness to play Alderweireld really punished the team today. I wonder if Alderweireld does really bad in training that makes him not to be at least on the bench. #THFC #TOTMCI #Spursy

Yes Hugo has been a bit of a liability. However he isn’t the only problem….
Why pay £25+mil for Moura if he is going to do is sit on the bench? Week in week out
Why was Son on the Bench?

Reality is we are MILES behind ManCity. Massive game Tuesday now as we need to bounce back win. Some concerns. Maybe Tuesday is the game to put Alderweireld in and see where he is. Wanyama too. #THFC

Don’t get me wrong, Davinson Sanchez is a brilliant young player, but his inexperience does cost us in the big moments.
Last year we conceded only 26 goals, this year it’s already 30.
We need the leadership and experience of Toby Alderweireld. #THFC
