Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly growing increasingly confident that they can keep Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld at the club beyond the end of the current season.
As reported by The Sun, Spurs are hopeful that the 30-year-old could sign an extension on his current deal at Tottenham, which expires in the summer.
It comes after a £25 million release clause remained untouched despite plenty of speculation that the Belgian was set to leave Spurs.
It would certainly come as a surprise to many if Tottenham did, in fact, secure a deal for Alderweireld to remain at the club beyond the end of the season. It has almost been an open secret that the experienced defender would be leaving Spurs next summer.
So this report has undoubtedly bee well-received by plenty of Tottenham fans.
Others, however, are less than convinced. Many are not exactly trusting of the source material and cannot see why Alderweireld would suddenly be staying at the club despite it looking for a long time now that this would be his final season at Tottenham.
Here is some of the best reaction to the report from Tottenham fans on Twitter…

Surely if this was true he’d have done so 2 years ago and at least doubled his salary for the last 2 years?

Spurs would need to offer him a contract in the first place. They haven’t.

He’s good but other teams have even better stoppers. Trouble is they cost a lot.

Not a chance. He’s gone in the summer and deep down we all know it
