Tottenham Hotspur fans took to Twitter to comment on Harry Winks’ showing against Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Englishman was selected to start by Mauricio Pochettino, with injuries ruling out Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.
It was a bold move by the Argentine, with Winks his least experienced first-team midfielder.
That said, he shone last season against Real Madrid in the same competition.
Despite Tottenham’s 4-2 defeat at Wembley, Winks had a decent game, and has perhaps thrown his name into the hat for the weekend Premier League clash with Cardiff City.
Certainly he grew into the game, and definitely finished stronger than he started.
A lasting impression
Winks definitely reminded a few people what he’s all about.
In the game he demonstrated good vision and passing, and worked his socks off trying to harry the Barcelona midfielders.
It was also going to be a tough ask to completely nullify the likes of Sergio Busquets, Arthur, Philippe Coutinho and Lionel Messi – especially the latter, who decided to put on a total masterclass.
But Winks was by no means out of his depth.
He proved that he can mix it with the best, just as he did last season against Barca’s fiercest rivals.
Social media buzz
After the game, fans took to social media to share their thoughts, and Winks came in for praise, particularly for his efforts in the second half:
We were largely outclassed (understandably) last night but I thought Kane, Toby, Lamela and Winks – particularly in the second half – all stood up. Winks showed some flashes of his brilliance, desperately hope he can stay fit now.

In terms of positives. I thought on the whole we played well. Barca had 2 key spells where they couldve been out of sight, save for a bit of luck on our part. Winks was wonderful, particularly in last 30 mins. Kane looks sharper by the game. Lucas was bright, Lamela grafted #THFC

Good to see Winks getting back in to shape, thought he played well. Kane was excellent as always, Lamella did well, but there were just too many errors which cost us. Highly unlikely we qualify from this position now.

Arthur was absolutely exceptional today, but also worth mentioning Harry Winks. Really great performance, especially in the 2nd half. Has done hell of a job being paired with Wanyama and Dier, who were both bad.
Two brilliant young midfielders, both a joy to watch.

Arthur was brilliant. I’m glad Barcelona fans rate Winks too, I absolutely love him

Harry Winks must have covered every blade of grass in the second half for Spurs.
He has definitely showed us after half-time he has the capability to compete with the world’s best teams just like Real Madrid last season.

Harry Winks must be shattered. He’s been everywhere for Spurs today. Such a good young player. Showing once again that he can compete with the world’s best out there.
