Tottenham Hotspur fans have lavished praise on Paulo Gazzaniga, after his two penalty saves saw the club edge past Watford in the Carabao Cup.

Spurs struggled against the Hornets at Stadium MK during the third round clash.

The north Londoners have just come through a tricky period of three straight defeats, but have now won their last two in all competitions.

The game was actually a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes, but Gazzaniga ensured victory via a penalty shootout.

The 2017 signing from Southampton denied Etienne Capoue and Domingos Quina, while Spurs dispatched all of their spot-kicks.

Gazzaniga filled in for the injured Michel Vorm, who probably would have played as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper.

That title may now be questionable following the 26-year-old’s heroics and Vorm’s poor form while deputising recently for Hugo Lloris.

Gazzaniga to keep place?

The stopper’s performance against Watford certainly draws the spotlight towards him.

His penalty saves were excellent, and he was also fairly solid during the game too.

The 26-year-old’s command of his own area is impressive.

His distribution leaves something to be desired, but he ultimately proved the match-winner on Wednesday.

Hugo Lloris is the club captain and will surely be reinstated once he recovers from his injury.

But Gazzaniga may well have just secured his status as the new number two, and could become a regular feature of Tottenham’s matchday squads in the Premier League.

And if Lloris comes into some poor form following his return, then he could well even replace the Frenchman.

Spurs fans are loving him

Some Tottenham fans flocked to Twitter during and after the game to heap praise on Gazzaniga, with some sure they want him to at least play understudy to Lloris:
