Denmark v Croatia played out one of the more tense games at the World Cup so far, which also saw two of the best penalty savers in world football go head-to-head. After 120 minutes the two teams could not be separated, after an opening four minutes which saw both sides find the back of the net. Penalties beckoned and Kasper Schmeichel and Danijel Subasic put on an excellent show between the sticks.

For Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen, it did not end well. His penalty was saved by Subasic, tipped onto the post in impressive fashion.

It summed up something of an indifferent display from the Spurs star. He struggled to get a creative foothold on the game and it was a major contributing factor to Denmark not being able to capitalise on what was a superior performance over their more-fancied rivals.

Danish fans will, of course, forgive him. The Tottenham midfielder is probably the only reason they are even at the tournament, with his virtuoso performances in qualifying dragging the Danes to Russia.

For Tottenham fans, it was a bittersweet outcome. They love Eriksen and wanted to see him do well. But, on the other hand, yesterday was his 57th in a very long 2017-18 campaign and he is in much need of a rest.

Tottenham fans will now hope he can put his feet up, get ready for next season and maybe even sign a new contract. Here is some of the best reaction to Eriksen’s World Cup exit…
