Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been discussing the transfer rumours surrounding him throughout the summer, including those of a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking to GQ Portugal, as relayed by Sky Sports, he stated he was ready to make the move to Tottenham this summer but a deal could not be thrashed out between the two clubs.
“As you all know, Tottenham made a lot of proposals for me. Everything was right with me – or practically should be.
“I never made any big demands, my manager was always dealing with the financials. It was and is my goal to play in England, Sporting you know that, everyone knows that, and there were conditions for things to be done.
“But Sporting understood that the value was not enough and I have to respect the decision.”
As reported by The Sun, Sporting wanted about £60 million for their star midfielder and it seems Daniel Levy was not willing to meet such a price. Considering his reputation as one of football’s most frugal chairman and Sporting being one of the hardest negotiators in club football, a deal always looked difficult.
Tottenham fans are however disappointed they could not get their hands on Fernandes. With Christian Eriksen clearly eyeing a move away from the club, the 24-year-old looked a perfect replacement.

Fernandes scored 32 goals and assisted 18 last season and has started this season in similar form, with two goals and four assists in his first five games of the campaign.
Instead, Tottenham signed Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis but many fans are wishing that the club had managed to secure both players this summer.
Here is some of the best reaction from Twitter to Fernandes’ comments about a Tottenham move.
