Tottenham Hotspur fans have a clear message for former player Mauricio Pochettino compared to Lionel Messi
Tottenham Hotspur allowed Marcus Edwards to make a permanent move to Portugal in the summer.
Tottenham Hotspur fans had plenty of hope for talented young winger Marcus Edwards during his time at the club.
The truth was, they had every reason to be excited about his progress.
Edwards burst onto the scene for Tottenham back in 2016. As reported by Sky Sports, he was likened to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino. However, that comment acted more like a curse than a blessing for the player. Indeed, Pochettino himself even confirmed as much, as reported by Football.London.
“Sometimes I wonder whether it was wise to liken him (Edwards) to Messi. He’s only 17. At that age, Messi was making his debut for a Barcelona side featuring Ronaldinho.”
Edwards struggled to break through at Tottenham and suffered a poor loan spell at Norwich City in 2017-18.
What followed was a loan move in the Netherlands with Excelsior. Edwards provided five assists in 33 games for the Rotterdam club who were relegated from the Eredivisie.

Finally, last summer, Tottenham allowed Edwards to leave the club permanently. He headed to Portuguese side Vitoria on a free transfer and has since impressed in Guimares.
With seven assists and six goals this season, including one against Arsenal in the Europa League, Edwards is finally starting to realise some of his potential.
He took to Twitter yesterday to showcase his performances in the Vitoria side so far in the currently suspended 2019-20 season.
Clearly, plenty of Tottenham fans saw the footage and were quick to praise the impact of their former youngster. For those asking if Tottenham have a buy-back, the answer appears to be no. Football.London have, however, reported that Tottenham have a 50% sell-on clause in Edwards deal which contains a €15 million (£13m) release clause.
So perhaps Tottenham could exercise that 50 percent reduction on his clause one day, and give plenty of fans their wish of seeing Edwards in the Tottenham first-team.
