Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy wise to give Bernard a wide-berth in the summer

One of Everton’s eye-catching additions in the summer was the Brazilian talent, Bernard. The 14-cap Selecao international arrived on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk, where he had been impressing for a number of seasons.

However, Everton were not the only Premier League team keen. According to The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur were also looking into signing the player.

The report suggested Spurs were keen, until they discovered his wage demands. Bernard wanted £200,000-a-week, likely comparable to the vast salary he would have made in Ukraine.

Again, it was a decision that might have frustrated Spurs fans. Chairman Daniel Levy has a reputation for being very tight with his spending money and Bernard, whilst being a Bosman, proved too much salary wise and Spurs missed out on a potential new recruit. However, it appears Tottenham have made the right call.

Not only would that sort of wage completely upset the dressing room dynamic at Spurs but he has also not proved anywhere near such investment.

The 26-year-old has only shown flashes of his obvious ability at Goodison Park this season. He tore the likes of Burnley, Leicester City and Fulham apart but has also been ineffective in the majority of his appearances. His tally of one goal and four assists in 25 appearances will hardly have Tottenham fans green with envy.

This one has, so far, proven to be a good call from the often divisive Tottenham chairman.
