Eric Dier remains a Tottenham player, despite the fact he’s barely played this season.
The defender is clearly out of the picture at Spurs right now, but, for some reason, he’s yet to leave north London.
Speaking on Off The Ball, Martin Lipton has now shared one reason why Dier hasn’t left Tottenham yet.
Indeed, according to the journalist, Dier has been kept around at Spurs because he’s such a popular and important player in the dressing room, and while he doesn’t have a role to play on the pitch right now, his contributions behind the scenes appear to be very important.

Dier wasn’t sold because he’s popular
Lipton shared what he knows about the £4m defender.
“Eric Dier is an interesting one, he’s in the squad every week, he’s just not playing. He’s a popular player, he’s very popular with the other players, he always has been. I think that’s one of the reasons he stayed actually. He’s a bit like Conor Coady at the World Cup it seems, he’s not going to play but he’s there for what he gives the group,” Lipton said.
Important
It sounds silly to keep a player just because their teammates like them, but squad harmony and cohesion are such important factors for any team’s success.
We saw last season that this squad crumbled when things started to go awry behind the scenes, but now, they’re much improved as the feelgood factor has been brought back to north London for the first time in a long time.
Dier may not be a key player for Spurs, but he’s certainly playing his part behind the scenes, and you can’t knock him for being a team player and keeping spirits high in the dressing room.
It sounds as though Dier is still quite important at Tottenham in his own way.
