Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly rivalling Everton in a move to sign Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer – but surely Jose Mourinho’s side have a trump card to beat the Toffees to the Austrian’s signature?
The Telegraph have claimed that Tottenham are to wait until the global health crisis passes before weighing up a move for the 24-year-old, in order to survey their financial position. Sky Sports claim he is worth £35million.
However, Spurs are not alone in their pursuit of the Saints skipper, given his contract expires in the summer of 2021. Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton are also keen to lure him to Goodison Park – despite selling the midfielder at Bayern.
Both Tottenham and Everton need a midfielder of Hojbjerg’s steely style. Spurs are too lightweight in that position, with Tanguy Ndombele failing to replace the physicality of Mousa Dembele. Fabian Delph has struggled since joining Everton.

Hojbjerg, given his leadership, age and price, is a perfect candidate for both sides. But surely Tottenham have a trump card in order to pip Everton to Hojbjerg’s signature, and that is in the form of Kyle Walker-Peters.
Walker-Peters joined Southampton on loan in January without an option to buy, and has since only played once for the south coast club. But with Cedric Soares due to leave permanently for Arsenal, Southampton need a right-back.
It would make sense for Spurs, then, to include Walker-Peters in a deal along with the majority of Hojbjerg’s asking price in order to beat Everton. Southampton would still be receiving plenty of cash, but would also solve their right-back issue.
Such a move would surely see Tottenham beat Everton to the capture of midfielder Hojbjerg.
