Tottenham have missed the boat on Dwight McNeil, new Burnley deal agreed – TBR View

Tottenham’s summer has been an excellent one in terms of the transfer market, with Jose Mourinho bringing in big names like Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon to the club.

Spurs finally look like a squad who could really challenge for honours this term. Of course, the likes of Harry Kane need to stay fit and Mourinho will need to ensure he gets the very best from his team.

But with a 6-1 win at Man United already in the bag, spirits are high in the Tottenham camp. It should be a result to push them onto bigger and better things and they have a very winnable game against West Ham this weekend.

However, as with most transfer windows, there’s always a few who you can look and think they might have got away.

Burnley winger Dwight McNeil is someone who falls into that boat for Spurs. Having been tracked by the club from as early as January this year, according to the Guardian, it comes as a surprise that the club never followed that interest up.

Bad timing

The 20-year-old has today penned a new deal with the Clarets. It puts an end, for now at least, to any speculation he might leave and protects Burnley if they did go down and were forced into a sale.

But Tottenham might regret not pursuing McNeil. Young, pacey wingers don’t come about too often in the game and McNeil is almost a throwback to players of yesteryear, given how he beats his man and looks to whip a ball in.

Of course, it could just be a case of bad timing. Tottenham have attacking options aplenty and so much so that they allowed Ryan Sessegnon to move away this summer on loan.

A future deal for McNeil shouldn’t be disgarded. For now, the big signings of the likes of Bale and Vinicius will probably be enough, while Steven Bergwijn hasn’t been with the club long.

But in terms of young, up and coming talents within the Premier League, they don’t come much better than Dwight McNeil and Spurs should definitely ensure they maintain their interest for the foreseeable.
