Tottenham have ‘growing chance’ of making bid for £50m midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur have already made two signings this month, and there’s still time and desire for Spurs to bring more players in.

Tottenham signed Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin early on in the January transfer window, and they remain linked with numerous players.

Spurs could certainly do with bolstering their midfield ranks next month and Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher seems to still be in their sights.

Last week, journalist Ben Jacobs said on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE that the Blues will sell the 23-year-old if the right offer comes along.

Meanwhile, The Independent has reported that Tottenham plan to press ahead with their pursuit of Gallagher, who Chelsea are apparently willing to sell for £50million.

At the same time, Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly unwilling to sell Gallagher mid-season, while the player himself doesn’t seem keen on a move either.

Now, Dean Jones – writing on GiveMeSport – has provided an update about the state play involving Tottenham and Gallagher.

Tottenham must ‘test the water’ for Conor Gallagher

Jones believes that Tottenham must “test the water” to find out whether they actually have a solid chance of signing Gallagher, who is in the last 18 months of his contract.

The transfer insider also claims that Spurs are “surprised” at how speculation over the midfielder’s future has been allowed to continue, considering how crucial he is to Chelsea.

“Tottenham need to test the waters first to discover whether it’s even worth making a bid,” wrote Jones.

“I don’t think Tottenham will make a bid unless they understand that Chelsea are open-minded about selling him.

“We’re now getting into the late stages of the transfer window, and this was the point at which Tottenham would always find out just how much intent there was for Chelsea to sell.

“Tottenham are surprised that this one has been able to linger on. They thought a contract would be signed by now, and he’d be out of reach.

“But it hasn’t happened, and because of that, I think there is a growing chance that they will go and put a bid in for Gallagher.

“But we should understand that if that bid goes in, it means that there have been intermediaries testing it out to see whether he is gettable.”

Gallagher is obviously an “outstanding” player of the highest quality and, at 23 years of age, he has his whole career ahead of him.

It doesn’t look as though anyone connected with Chelsea wants him gone, but the club’s hierarchy seems willing to sell anyway.

Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks. This seems more like the sort of deal that would take place in summer, but you never know.
