It has been a quiet summer for Tottenham in terms of transfer business. So quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Yet all of a sudden the rumour mill is starting with just over a week left of the window, with Geoffrey Kondogbia having been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The news comes in a report from France Football, which The Sun expand on by adding that he is valued at £72 million, despite having only joined Valencia permanently in May after the Spanish club executed an option to buy in his loan deal worth £22 million.
The powerful Frenchman rebuilt his reputation with some impressive displays at Mestalla last season, proving himself after being rejected by Inter Milan as they shipped him out to the first suitor.
In Spain, he showed what he’s made of and why Premier League clubs may well be interested, though it would be mad for Tottenham to consider a move for him.
“It’s not only against Sevilla this weekend, he’s played magnificentally all season. He’s decisive and key for us. We saw Pogba against Sevilla a few days ago and Kondogbia today… If I were the French national coach, I would take Kondogbia, but I’m not.”
Coach Marcelino isn’t afraid to make some impressive comparisons.
With Moussa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier just three players who fulfill the same role, it would make no sense to spend such a substantial fee on one player who does not solve a major problem position at the club.
Attacking playmakers and wide man are a far greater need, as is a back-up striker to support Harry Kane in the front line. £72 million, or a fee anywhere near that figure, could go to much better use on one of those roles.
Kondogbia’s quality cannot be doubted, but it is hard to imagine that after such a quiet summer, the club would spring into action with such an expensive signing which would go against the club’s policy of aiming for young players at reasonable prices, particularly given that he would not offer homegrown status either.
