On Tuesday night, Real Madrid defeated Roma 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico and advanced to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
A massive blunder by Roma centre-half Federico Fazio gifted Real Madrid their opening goal, a sight that will come as no surprise to Tottenham Hotspur fans.
The Argentine defender was signed by Spurs in 2014, yet played just 32 times in north London and completed a solitary full season at the club.
After one League Cup appearance in 2015/16, Fazio was loaned out to Sevilla, before completing a permanent move to Roma in 2017.
Fazio’s time at Tottenham was marred by poor decision making, rash challenges, and the propensity to give away numerous penalties and red cards.
And with the scores level at zero against Real Madrid in the Champions League, the Roma centre-back inexplicably handed the Spaniards their winning goal.
After forcing his goalkeeper to clear the ball high into the air after a poor back pass, Fazio won the ensuing header and proceeded to play Gareth Bale through on goal, and the Welshman duly slotted home to make it 1-0.
Federico Fazio’s dreadful error destroyed Roma’s chances of beating Real Madrid, reminding Tottenham Hotspur why they were so keen to offload the defender after his disappointing spell at the club.
