Tottenham Hotspur kick-started their Champions League campaign with a win, but fans were also talking about the huge talent who was named on their bench.
Thomas Frank’s team defeated Villarreal 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Lucas Bergvall’s deflected cross proving to be the only goal of the game.
Tottenham Hotspur’s performance was rather underwhelming though as the hosts struggled to carve out too many meaningful chances against the Spanish side.
Despite a rather uninspiring display on the pitch, Spurs fans were excited and shocked to see the youngster Frank named on the bench against Villarreal.

Jun’ai Byfield makes the Tottenham bench after 90 minutes for U-19
Tottenham Hotspur fans were so impressed to see Jun’ai Byfield named on the bench for the first team just hours after playing 90 minutes for the U-19s.
The 16-year-old is quickly becoming one of the North London club’s brightest young talents, and he once again impressed for the U-19s.
Wayne Burnett’s side impressed by beating Villarreal 5-3 in their UEFA Youth League opener at Hotspur Way on Tuesday afternoon.
The very talented Luca Williams-Barnett grabbed a goal and an assist during the match, whilst Tynan Thompson also impressed in attack.
But it was Byfield who was selected to make the bench for the first team, and he appears to be the most highly rated from his age group.
After the match, Spurs fans took to X to share their praise for the teenager and are predicting a bright future for the academy star.
One fan said: “Jun’ai Byfield played this afternoon against Villarreal U-19s and is on the Tottenham men’s team bench to face Villarreal’s men’s team tonight! What a day he’s had.”
“Jun’ai Byfield already played today and is on the bench now. Tottenham love a homegrown centre back,” added another.
There was further praise for the youngster: “Fairs Byfield just had a game today, and he’s made the bench.
Finally, another fan claimed: “Byfield getting a little run out after getting 90 minutes earlier >>>”
Jun’ai Byfield and Luca Williams-Barnett deserve first-team minutes vs Doncaster
Tottenham host Doncaster in the third round of the EFL Cup next week and this will present Frank with a great opportunity to hand the academy players minutes.
Byfield and Williams-Barnett are certainly among the players who deserve the chance to show what they can do at senior level.
Williams-Barnett already has three goals and three assists in five matches for Spurs’ academy sides despite still only being 16.
The winger managed an impressive goal and assist in the EFL Trophy against League Two side Bristol Rovers and he deserves the chance to play against Doncaster.
