Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly had an offer for Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes rejected by the Portuguese giants – and Spurs fans are desperate to see the youngster signed.
Portuguese outlet CM Journal claim Spurs have had a £38.6million bid for the Portugal Under-21 international rejected by Benfica, but remain intent on landing the central midfielder.
Spurs are likely to be after a midfielder who can score goals from the middle of the park. The loss of Mousa Dembele in the January window was a big blow, with Spurs failing to replace the Belgian.
It has left Mauricio Pochettino with just Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Victor Wanyama as senior options in central midfield, who have all suffered injury during the second half of the season.

Moussa Sissoko has been the club’s saving grace this season, changing position from a winger into midfield. But more cover in central midfield is required, and that is where 20-year-old Fernandes comes in.
This season, he has starred for Benfica since breaking into the senior side. He has clocked up 44 appearances in all competitions, and had a hand in nine goals – scoring three and creating six.
None of Dier, Wanyama, Winks or Sissoko are known for their goals. So bringing in a holding midfield player who can find the back of the net is crucial for Pochettino’s side.
Tottenham fans have reacted on Twitter to the rejected offer for Fernandes, and some are desperate for Spurs to launch a second offer as they believe he could be the answer to their midfield woes. Portuguese outlet A Bola claim Fernandes has a release clause worth £102million.
