Tottenham fans want Premier League striker after his performance

Danny Ings helped inspire Southampton to victory on Tuesday night in the Premier League with his two-goal heroics – and some Tottenham fans on Twitter were left raving about the Englishman’s Premier League display in midweek.

After an impressive individual performance, a selection of Spurs supporters on social media were claiming they’d love to bring him to north London when the summer transfer window opens.

Ings, who joined Southampton for £20million (BBC) from Liverpool, has been a real talisman on the pitch during his time at St Mary’s.

The quick striker scored twice last night during a 3-1 home win for the Saints against Crystal Palace in a league fixture.

His opening goal was one where he a showed true attacker’s instinct. The 28-year-old took one touch to control the ball inside a crowed box, before producing a swivelled low finish into the corner of the net.

He added another to his personal tally with a simple one-touch finish past the goalkeeper after a perfectly timed run behind the defence.

Despite the fact he’s had a couple of minor injury problems this season, it’s still been another year where Ings has shown he’s a proven striker in the Premier League when he gets a regular run of games.

He’s now scored 12 league goals this campaign, as well as one in the FA Cup, in just 30 games across all competitions. Another record that stands out is 46 goals in 97 Southampton appearances during his time on the South Coast.

Ings’ latest display had some Spurs fans on Twitter begging for him to join them next season.

England captain Harry Kane is the obvious first-choice striker at the north London club, scoring 31 goals in all competitions so far this season, as well as setting up 16 assists.

However, when Carlos Vinicius’ loan expires at the end of the season, Kane will be the only senior option at striker for Spurs.

There are several issues higher up on the agenda right now than Spurs targeting a striker. Firstly, they need to appoint a new full-time manager, as well as do their best to secure the long-term future of Kane.

They will also need to look though towards how their squad is shaping up right now ahead of next season, and it’s obvious that whoever the new manager is they will have to identify a centre-forward to sign.

Whether Ings would be available, and at what price, remains to be seen.

It’s interesting though that this summer he’ll be entering the final year of his contract with Southampton, and there is no doubt that he’s got the individual talent to perform at a bigger club. He may feel he’s got a point to prove too as his time at Anfield with Liverpool was wrecked by injuries.

The main issue right now though is any attacker that joins Spurs knows they are going to be playing second fiddle to Kane for as long as the frontman is around.

Here are some Spurs supporters who suggest Ings could replace Vinicius next year in the squad:
