Tottenham fans want Leeds United star to replace one of their mainstays

Turning 35 in December, Hugo Lloris is about to enter the last 12 months of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur and with the France captain being linked with a return to his home country, Spurs are likely to be in the market for a new goalkeeper.

English trio Dean Henderson, Nick Pope and Sam Johnstone have all been linked, but do they meet the criteria? Henderson is edging towards becoming Manchester United’s number one and there seems a reducing chance that he will be allowed to go.

Pope is likely to cost a fortune, and there are doubts over his ability with the ball – while Johnstone is not yet massively proven at Premier League level. This season, being his first proper top-tier campaign, has seen him fail to prevent relegation.

Daniel Levy is massively renowned for his tight stronghold on the Spurs coffers and driving a hard bargain, and Spurs will have to sell Lloris this summer to bring in any cash for his signature. Unless of course, he signs a new deal with the London club.

But a new manager coming in will surely look to sign a younger goalkeeper with Premier League experience. One that is good with his feet, one that has excellent reflexes and one that knows what it takes to be successful in England’s top tier.

Following Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday, Lloris and Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier embraced in the middle of the park – described as a special moment by Meslier on Instagram. He is just 21 years of age.

But the former Lorient star is impressing many. Joining Leeds on loan in the summer of 2019 from Lorient, he eventually broke past Kiko Casilla and is now first choice at Elland Road – having made his deal permanent at the start of the campaign.

While Meslier could not stop Son Heung-min scoring, it was only the seventh goal in his last eight Premier League games that he has conceded. He has 10 clean sheets in the 34 league games he has played, and is up there with the most-saves made.

Impressive, for a young goalkeeper that had only played for Leeds 11 times before the start of the season – and had never played at top-flight level, not even for Lorient. He has broken records, too, during his first season in the Premier League.

He beat Joe Hart’s record of clean sheets in the league under 21, with eight. He is also the youngest goalkeeper to clock up 10 clean sheets in the Premier League, once again beating Hart. Incredible stats for a goalkeeper still so inexperienced.

Yes, mistakes have been made but his recent form have seen him iron out those mistakes. Decision making in possession is better, he is more commanding from crosses and set-pieces, and his save to deny Serge Aurier on Sunday was incredible.

Tottenham fans have discussed Meslier and the possibility that he could replace him in London in the coming months, with Lloris going. Certainly, if such a move does not happen at club level, it might well happen with the national team soon.

How much would it cost to sign Meslier is unknown, but he only cost Leeds £5million (Telegraph).
