Tottenham fans take to Twitter to discuss Harry Winks ahead of Palace trip
Harry Winks has fallen out of favour with Tottenham Hotspur fans.
Under Jose Mourinho during his 18-month spell with the club, Winks was one of the players who suffered.
The tidy central-midfielder has gone from a player who was always impressive on the ball and helped to set the tempo, to one who seemingly can’t help but make mistakes.
It doesn’t help that last season saw him come in as a bit-part option.
The 25-year-old completed 90 minutes for Tottenham on 15 occasions, yet only four of those 90s came in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).
This season looks to be following on the same path, though, as Winks’ only starts have come in the Europa Conference League.
It looks like Winks could be set to get a Premier League start this weekend, though, as Oliver Skipp appeared to limp off with a groin injury for England’s U21s.
Skipp has been incredible for Tottenham so far this season.
The 20-year-old has started in all of the Lilywhites’ Premier League games this season and has shown his tenacity as a ball-winning midfielder.
Winks just doesn’t have that side to his game, though.
While Winks might be a fantastic mover of the ball, he is just not as snappy in the tackle as Skipp has proved to be.
Nuno Espirito Santo might find a way to get the best out of Winks by switching Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg into a more defensive role and allow the England man to play the box-to-box role.
That won’t be enough to convince the fans, however.
A lot of the supporters are down on Winks after his performances last season for the Lilywhites.
Yet if he can string together some impressive displays then there’s no reason why he can’t change the fans’ minds.
